Sony's expressed intent to end production of PlayStation discs in January 2028 seems to be leading to an impasse. As displeased consumers continue to decry the platform holder's all-digital strategy, there seems to be a resurgence of game developers and publishers embracing physical media. Alien: Isolation 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the 2014 cult classic horror title, is the latest to highlight what appears to be a coming conflict.
In a clip from a recent Q&A session, Alien: Isolation 2 art director Ana Sopikova confirmed that the upcoming survival horror game will have a physical version. There is very little elaboration, with a text excerpt following: "Staying true to the analogue nature of Alien is one of [developer Creative Assembly's] core pillars. Alien: Isolation 2 will have a physical edition." But PlayStation (and other platforms) could have something to say.
Alien: Isolation 2 Confirms Physical Edition
Reading between the lines, an optimist might say this indicates a release in 2027 for Alien: Isolation 2. There are, of course, other platforms besides PS5, but releasing after Sony has ceased producing PlayStation discs doesn't leave a lot of options. Third-party publishers releasing their games on the Nintendo Switch 2 have so far largely relied on Game-Key Cards, which are not true physical versions, and are instead physical download vouchers.
PC has similarly been almost entirely digital for years at this point. Steam is the dominant storefront and launcher by quite a wide margin, and even games' collector's editions often come with just a PC code—most gaming PCs don't even have a disc drive. So what does an Alien: Isolation 2 physical edition look like? It's potentially on a full Switch 2 cartridge, or on an Xbox Series X disc, and maybe a PS5 disc if it comes out before 2028.
Alien: Isolation 2 Is Still Without a Release Date
Wanting to celebrate Alien's retro-futuristic analogue roots with a physical release of Isolation 2 is a commendable (and a clever way to generate some buzz during the PlayStation disc debacle), but sans a release date, it's a bit of a head-scratching statement. Alien: Isolation 2 was in early development in 2024 when it was announced, and was only officially revealed earlier this year at Summer Game Fest, where a demo was also playable.
A demo is a good sign of progress, but Creative Assembly has yet to provide a release window, which jeopardizes the veracity of the team's commitment to a physical version. Unless Sony makes a heel turn, a huge swath of the game's audience won't be able to purchase a physical copy—barring potential workarounds like limited releases from third-party manufacturers, but no such pipeline has emerged as yet.
Developers, publishers, and fans seem committed to ensuring physical media lives on, despite the long, gradual trend toward digital's current domination in the market. Alien: Isolation 2 will be a title to keep an eye on, not only for the return of its predecessor's intense gameplay, but because it may be going toe-to-toe with PlayStation's attempt at killing discs.
