One Piece Is Officially Bidding Farewell To Sanji As We Know Him

One Piece awaits the release of Chapter 1197 on November 1, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 49. This chapter is set to focus on the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji, and is set to change him forever.

One Piece Chapter 1196, which was released on October 18, 2026, finally forced Sanji to see his biggest weakness and overcome it for the first time. Sanji has finally overcome his suicidal nature, which was nerfing his physical capabilities tremendously and, above all, suppressing his Conqueror's Haki. Now, with his biggest limiters having officially been removed, Sanji is being changed forever, not just in terms of strength but also in terms of personality. A narcissistic persona of Sanji is set to be officially born here, as observed towards the end of Chapter 1196, and the upcoming chapter is set to continue this on November 1.

One Piece Chapter 1196 Unlocks Sanji's Vinsmoke Prince Persona

One Piece chapter 1196 was incredible for the character arc of Sanji. This chapter finally exposed to us his biggest weakness, which was his suicidal nature. Ever since the beginning of the series, Sanji has put himself in harm's way on many occasions for the sake of those he loves. This stems from his lack of self-worth and the fact that he believes himself to be the sacrificial lamb, and less important than others.

"Before you go, I have one thing to ask of you, Sanji! Don't mention to anyone that I'm your father. The fact that you're my son is a dark stain on my success. You're my secret shame! Do you understand me?" — Vinsmoke Judge, One Piece Chapter #841

Sanji's lack of self-worth stems from the abuse that he suffered at the hands of the Vinsmokes as a child. Given that he was always labeled as the shame of Germa, a stain on Judge's legacy, and a failure, his mindset was warped to the point where he felt that he was an expendable part of the Straw Hat Pirates, who was only good as long as he was doing something, and that dying in order to save them would be good enough.

Ivankov: There is one thing my candies have that you don't! Tell me what it is!

Newkama: I know what it is! It's Self-Love!!!

Ivankov: Anyone who doesn't love themselves can never truly love anyone else!"

— Ivankov confirms Sanji's biggest weakness, One Piece Chapter #1196

In many ways, Sanji was simply suicidal, and this was explored by Emporio Ivankov in a flashback in Chapter 1196 on October 18. According to Ivankov, Sanji's love was covered in wounds. While he could still win a lot of fights by throwing his body in harm's way and fighting in a suicidal manner, he would eventually hit his limits, which would then make him unable to save the ones he loves.

Sanji's fight against Killingham finally exposes his biggest weaknesses and finally makes him accept himself for what he truly is. Sanji finally showed himself some self-love in Chapter 1196 and accepted himself for what he truly is for the very first time. He is not going to throw his body in harm's way just for the sake of others, and will fight not just for the crew but also for himself. This has officially removed his biggest mental nerf, forcing him to rise as a powerful conqueror.

"Hey, Iva-chan! It seems that the day of my limits is finally here. I need strength right here right now. If I build up my defense, will I get stronger? While I need power, you're telling me to take care of myself?" — Sanji thinks to himself, One Piece Chapter #1196

However, while Sanji's rise in strength is practically guaranteed here, what is also interesting to see is the change of personality. Sanji's character switched starkly from being the kind and gentle cook of the crew to a somewhat narcissistic prince who was comfortable ordering around a Celestial Dragon. Given that Celestial Dragons are the Gods of the world, Sanji placing himself above them and asking Killingham to bow his head felt like a stark change of character.

This was reminiscent of the Sanji we saw in One Piece Chapter 844, where he assumed the Vinsmoke Prince persona as he asked Luffy to leave Whole Cake Island. Back then, Sanji was only putting up an act so he could save the crew. This time, Sanji's Prince persona is being channeled from his very core, and he fully embodies it in an attempt to awaken his true powers.

Eiichiro Oda Turns Sanji Into A Cold-Blooded Monster

Eiichiro Oda's character writing of Sanji has always been impeccable. In fact, in the Straw Hat Pirates, hardly any other member has received as much characterization as the cook of the crew, and this has continued in the Elbaf arc as well. In Wano, Sanji was on the receiving end of some of the most brilliant character writing as he was forced to make a choice between turning into a cold-blooded killer or the person that Luffy accepted. As we saw, Sanji was eventually able to manifest the powers of Germa’s scientific advancements and use them to beat Queen the Plague in Chapter 1034, which was officially released on December 6, 2021.

"I won't take a single hit from you any longer. I don't care if you're a Celestial Dragon or whatever. You're standing there talking down to me in front of the people who took us in. You're getting on my nerves. Your head is too high. I said, bow down, horse-man!" — Sanji's nature shifts, One Piece Chapter #1196

Back then, Sanji's progression towards becoming a cold-blooded monster was teased by Oda. Now, it appears that he will finally embody that persona as he looks to finish his battle against Saint Killingham. One Piece Chapter 1197, which is set to be released on November 1, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 49, will most certainly show Sanji wielding the Color of the Supreme King and finally wrap up the battle against Saint Killingham. In doing so, Sanji's cold-blooded and kingly persona is going to shine, making him akin to the evil prince that we all got to see a glimpse of in the Whole Cake Island arc. In many ways, this sets up yet another conflict for Sanji, which he may have to overcome later down the line, and it stands as an exciting character development for the cook of the Straw Hats.

Sanji Is Set To Unlock The Color Of The Supreme King In One Piece 1197

Regardless of the personality changes that Sanji undergoes in Chapter 1197, one thing that we can state with absolute certainty is that he is gaining the Color of the Supreme King in Chapter 1197. Sanji, just like the other conquerors in the One Piece world, was born with the Color of the Supreme King. However, this Haki of his was being suppressed due to his lack of self-love, a lack of sense of self, and above all, his suicidal nature.

Now, Sanji has finally gained the conviction that he needed and truly understood his own self by abandoning his suicidal nature and accepting himself for who he really is, and is set to awaken the Color of the Supreme King in Chapter 1197 on November 1, 2026. Fans all over the world are eagerly waiting to see him ascend in terms of power level and gain the Color of the Supreme King for himself. We absolutely cannot wait to see how Oda handles this big power-up for the cook of the Straw Hats.
