Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced a new StarCraft game, and it is not the strategy sequel many expected. As reported by Variety, the title is simply called StarCraft, and it is an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter targeting a 2030 release.

Blizzard confirmed the game at BlizzCon 2026, held at the Anaheim Convention Center on 12-13 September.

The game is being led by Dan Hay, the former director of Far Cry 5 at Ubisoft. Variety reports that Blizzard describes the project as early in development, with gameplay reveals and deeper looks at the world promised for future years.

The studio says it intends to honour the franchise's history while pushing the universe in a new direction.

Setting and Story

Variety confirmed the new StarCraft is set in the Koprulu Sector, 70 years after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void (2015).

That makes it technically the third mainline entry in the series, though Blizzard is dropping the numbering entirely and simply titling it StarCraft.

The last brand-new StarCraft release was StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in 2010. StarCraft: Remastered, a re-release of the 1998 original, came out in 2017. This announcement ends more than a decade without a fresh mainline entry.

What the Cinematic Revealed

Kotaku described the announce cinematic in detail. It follows a character named Holt through what appears to be military training and a subsequent deployment into a combat zone overrun with Zerg. Holt's weapon jams in the chaos.

The scene cuts to an image of his ruined armour and a grim fate implied for the soldier, ending the trailer on a bleak note.

No gameplay was shown at BlizzCon; the cinematic was the entirety of the public reveal.

A Long-Rumoured Project Finally Confirmed

A StarCraft shooter has circulated as a rumour for years.

Kotaku notes the project traces back at least as far as a cancelled Blizzard initiative codenamed Ares in 2019, and that a 2024 job listing pointing to an open-world shooter led by a former Ubisoft developer aligned with what was unveiled this weekend.

Blizzard described the game as a new entry in the StarCraft universe, emphasising that it sits alongside rather than replacing the legacy of the real-time strategy games.

The accompanying trailer description frames the game around soldiers carrying forward the sacrifices of those who fought the Zerg before them.

BlizzCon 2026 Context

The StarCraft reveal was one of several major announcements at BlizzCon 2026, the first edition of the event held since 2023. Blizzard also announced an animated Diablo series currently in development at Netflix.

StarCraft is set for release in 2030 on platforms yet to be confirmed.
